Protecting employees from potential injury risks in the workplace is a consequential goal for risk management and employees. The Infectious Disease Specialists infusion clinic is at a contingency for accidents, injuries, and exposures. “Health care workers face a wide range of hazards on the job, including needle stick injuries, back injuries, exposure, latex allergy, violence, and stress” ("NIOSH Workplace Safety & Health Topics", 2011, para. 1). The purpose of this paper is to identify the processes Infectious Disease Specialists has in place and what the plan for improvement is. A literature search will assist how other health care offices are comparing in prevention of workplace injuries.

Steps Currently Addressing Workplace Injury

The current risk management system to reduce or prevent workplace injuries starts with the initial hiring process. Exposure to chemicals and blood borne pathogens like hepatitis and HIV via accidental needle sticks or exposures are an increased risk at Infectious Disease Specialists. “Congress created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education, and assistance” (United States Department of Labor, n.d.). An employer is expected to follow the OSHA standards and provide education and training to employees. The first step to prevention is to provide the health care professional (HCP) with standards of practice and expectations of the organization. Second, the employer must provide training to the employee about exposure risks and aftercare if the HCP is exposed. Finally, the organization needs to offer the available vaccinations. An employee can accept or decline the vaccines and documentation of acceptance or declination to these vaccinations needs to be placed in the employee’s file. When an employee chooses to decline preventative vaccines it puts him or her at increased risk if an accidental exposure or needle stick occurs.
