Mrs. Karen Gordon:
I am writing to you as a resident of the city of Hills, a mother, and a nurse concerned about the safety of our parks and recreation areas. I am a Registered Nurse currently enrolled in the BSN program at University of Phoenix. I am pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health. As a future public health nurse, I have an interest in promoting an increase in physical activity and healthy eating habits in our community. Therefore I trust you share my concerns regarding the importance of creating a safe environment in our city parks and recreation areas. I believe if we create a safe environment our community members would be enticed into our parks and recreations area, which will in turn increase their physical activity and decrease obesity. During a windshield survey of my community assignment for school the majority of the city’s parks and recreation areas were noted to be well groomed and clean, but with graffiti filled walls. Even though these areas are owned and maintained by the city of Hills, public parks appear to be controlled by self-appointed unofficial leaders. These self-appointed leaders are territorial and oppose the use of the park by the public. The only people allowed in these public areas are people somehow affiliated with these unofficial leaders. The environment in these public green areas was unwelcoming and unsafe. Illegal drug transactions were apparent and in plain view. As a community member I cannot allow my children to enter this type of environment for the purpose of increasing their physical...[continues]
