Smoking is one of the biggest detriments to our society. My community is no different. In Columbia County Florida, adults who smoke are at 29.4%. 10% higher than the state of Florida average of 19.3% (Florida Department of Health, 2010). Smoking is an addiction. Addiction is defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary as “a compulsive need for and use of a habit forming substance” The habit forming substance in tobacco is nicotine. A typical cigarette contains nine milligrams of nicotine. According to e How Health (2011), “the nicotine is not the primary cause for concern in cigarettes. It is the method used to ingest the nicotine that presents a grave danger to smokers. Nicotine, along with hundreds of other chemicals, attaches itself to the tar inside the smoke and is absorbed by the lungs when the smoke contacts tissue” (Significance, para. 1). Smoking tobacco causes many diseases that are chronic and deadly. These diseases include cancer, cardiovascular disease, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Tobacco is a killer. Most people who smoke know that they should quit but they don’t know how to quit.

The CHN will also promote the Healthy People 2020 goals and objectives concerning tobacco use and risks.

Educational Methods

I would start by having a health booth each month at the local farmers market that is held in my community’s Downtown Park each Friday night in the spring and summer. The CHN would speak to the local nursing college to request volunteers to work at the booth. Another outlet would...[continues]
