Condition:

Addison’s disease- an endocrine disorder with not enough hormones made in the adrenal cortex.

Signs & Symptoms

Anorexia/nausea, Hyperpigmentation (bronzing color of the skin and mucous membranes, decreased bowel sounds, GI upset, Hypoglycemia, white, patchy area of depigmented skin (vitiligio), hypotension (due to increased capillary permeability and decreased ability for vessels to constrict), women stop having periods, abnormal heart rhythms, pain in back or abdomen

Conventional Therapy

Medications that are suited for each individual person. Such as hydrocortisone or cortisone acetate for Cortisol replacement by mouth, and fludrocortisone acetate (Florinef) to replace Aldosterone. It is also recommended to increase salt intake.

Complementary or Alternative Therapy

A integration of these herbs: Borago officinalis (Borage), Eleutherococcus senticosis (Siberian Ginseng) and Astragalus membranaceous (Huang Qi) improves the work of the adrenal glands and helps to fight stress.

Educational Need a patient might require

Carry identification at all times with doctor’s name, phone number and name of a close relative or friend. 100 mg of cortisol should be carried and administered if the person is found wounded or confused and cannot speak. If a patient is vomiting, they may require injections of hydrocortisone.

Hypothyroidism- low thyroid hormone production by the thyroid.

Signs & Symptoms

fatigue, slow GI system, weight increased but not eating more, feeling of being cold, speech can be slowed or slurred; to articulate, need muscle tone, no expression, need muscle tone, -patient may be totally immobile, slow pulse, goiter

Conventional Therapy

Replacement of thyroid hormones with these medications: Synthroid, Proloid, or Cytomel

Complementary or Alternative Therapy

Acupuncture can fix hormonal imbalances, this encompasses thyroid disorders as well.

Education on the dangers of thyroxine are caused by taking too little or too much. If too little is taken, hypothyroidism will continue. If too much is taken, the development of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism will occur.

Condition

Conn’s disease (hyperaldosteronism)- Not a common disease, the excessive production aldosterone produced by the adrenal gland.

Signs & Symptoms

complaints of a headache, increased frequency of urination at night, patient is very thirsty, Pins and needles sensation, tetany, Muscle weakness, Transient paralysis, Arterial hypertension, Low potassium level, Increased volume of blood, Increased blood sodium level, High alkalinity of blood and body fluids, Tingling, Sensation of warmth, Muscle spasms, High aldosterone levels, Sodium retention, Increased nighttime urination, High blood pressure, Low blood potassium levels, Retinal disease, Abnormal heart rhythm

Conventional Therapy

Manage high blood pressure, fluid buildup and low blood potassium levels. Surgery on the adrenal glands can result in improvement in symptoms.

Complementary or Alternative Therapy

Low salt diet.
