Millions of people are homeless in the United States. One reason that homelessness is such a major problem is that there are multiple causes of factors that cross lines of age, gender, and socioeconomic status. Many homeless people are on the streets because they have had some form of mental illness or are addicted to drugs or alcohol. Those who are homeless are at greater risk for illness and injuries including sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and substance abuse (Edelman & Mandle, 2002).
