Community emergency preparedness and response relates to a community or communities that need to be prepared to respond to any disaster that may occur. As in the case of episode five in season two in this week’s assignment. A fire was near the community of Neighborhood and the residents were developing respiratory issues related to the smoke. As with any disaster, communities and states need to have a plan in place and be ready to take action for the safety of the people.

Summary of events for the Community Emergency Preparedness and Response Paper

Neighborhood is a community located near a forest and along the bank of the river with a population of 64, 200 residents. A forest fire has been raging for five days and is nearing the town of Neighborhood, destroying numerous acres of land. Firefighters are battling to obtain control of the forest fire, whereas the health care workers are battling to keep the patients breathing. The city officials are urging the citizens to stay indoors and not go out unless it is necessary related to the winds blowing the smoke toward the town. The smoky condition of the air is affecting everyone, but those with pre-existing lung problems are suffering the most. They also advised that if the fire advances toward the town they will inform them of the plan.

Jimmy Bley and his wife Cecelia are lifelong partners and both are in their 70s and have health issues. Jimmy has hearing loss and suffers from emphysema, which he describes as not that bad. Cecelia suffers from osteoarthritis that she describes as an annoyance. Cecelia has informed Jimmy that the dryer has broken again and Jimmy determines that he needs to go to the store to purchase the parts to repair the machine. Cecelia wants the dryer fixed but Jimmy knows that he should wait until the smoke clears before he ventures outdoors. One of their daughters came over and took Cecelia to the Laundromat so she can finish the laundry.

It is also noted that the Middle school was to host the annual science fair during this time. More than 50 children from the school were participating in the event with his or her projects. With the chance to enter his or her project into a higher level regional, statewide or nationwide science fairs.

Actions of Health care workers for the Community Emergency Preparedness and Response Paper

The local hospital is full of patients who are affected by the smoke of the fire in Neighborhood. The emergency department is in need of beds but none are available. The staff is stressed and morale is low related to the pressure to discharge other patients to make beds available for those in the emergency department.

Nurse Karen has noticed the effects of the forest fire on the residents at the Neighborhood Senior Center Nursing Clinic. Numerous seniors have needed the use of oxygen more often because of the fire. Nurse Karen informs those that have respiratory disorders to stay indoors to avoid the respiratory irritants.

School nurse, Violet, is accessing Kelsey Young and notes that her respiratory rate has increased and she is coughing frequently. Kelsey has asthma and she does not have an inhaler available. Community emergency preparedness means that a community should have a contingency plan which includes warning and evacuation systems to respond to any disaster that occurs. This paper discusses community emergency preparedness and response in a neighborhood from episode five of season two from The Nursing Neighborhood, an interactive program. This paper will examine the events in this episode, the response from health care workers, identify other public agencies that could have participated in the emergency, how public health care workers can enhance the preparedness of its citizens, and possible suggestions for personal preparedness in response to this and other emergencies.

The Nursing Neighborhood is a community with a population of 64,200 residents. It is located near a forest and a river bank. A forest fire has been raging for more than five days and spreading toward the town. The firefighters are struggling to contain the fire. Health care workers are faced with an increase in breathing problems from the residents who have had pre-existing lung disorders or diseases. City officials have warned residents to stay indoors because of the risks associated from the excessive smoke in the air. Residents have also being told by city officials that they are not in direct danger from the fire and will be notified in advance if the fire shifts toward the town.

The middle school is hosting the annual Science fair. Students have been encouraged to participate with projects from everyday to theoretical applications. Prizes will be awarded to the best with the possibility of entry into higher-leveled regional, statewide or national science fairs.

One of the families in the neighborhood is the Bleys. They have been married for over 56 years and are both in their mid-70s. Jimmy has emphysema and hearing loss, and smokes. He is aware of his health conditions and paces himself accordingly. He is still in denial regarding the increased difficulty with his breathing problems and does not want to quit smoking because... Community Emergency Preparedness and Response Paper

This paper examines the concepts of community emergency preparedness. Included throughout this paper is a summary of events that took place in the fictional community of Neighborhood. The emergency described will provide a back drop for an examination of government officials and health care workers as they respond to a community emergency. The analysis will extend into the identification of various public health agencies that could have participated in the response to this type of emergency. The paper will conclude with suggestions to enhance personal preparedness for this type of emergency and similar community emergencies.

As the story goes, the community of Neighborhood is ideally located close to the beautiful Neighborhood Forest and along the bank of the river Neighborhood. With a population of 65,000 residents and weather that is temperate year round; Neighborhood boasts all the amenities necessary for a modern community. Sadly, the local newspaper is reporting that a forest fire has been raging for five days and could draw nearer to the town of Neighborhood.

Local firefighters battle the flames in an effort to obtain control over the ravenous fire. At the same time health-care workers are battling to care for a surge of patients affected by the inhalation of particulate matter produced by the fire. While the air conditions are affecting everyone, it is those with pre-existing lung disease that suffer the most. Summarize the events that took place during Season 2/Episode 5

A forest fire has been raging for five days in the Neighborhood, population 64,200. Hospital-The local hospital is full of patients affected by the smoke of the fire in the Neighborhood. The emergency department is in need of beds, but none are available. The staff is stressed due to the pressure to discharge other patients to make beds available for those in the emergency department.

Senior Center-Karen has been a geriatric nurse for 30 years. She has been working at the Neighborhood Senior Center for 5 years. Karen can see the effects of the forest fire on the individuals at the Neighborhood Senior Center Nursing Clinic. Many of the seniors, including Mr. Dalion, have needed to use oxygen more often this week. Karen advises these individuals to stay indoors to avoid the respiratory irritants.

School-Kelsey Young, a 2nd grade student is sent to the school nurses office because she has been coughing. Violet, the school nurse notices that Kelsey has an increased respiration rate, is coughing frequently, and has wheezing in her lungs. Kelsey reports having trouble breathing. She does not have an inhaler at school so her mother is called to come pick her up. Violet encourages Mrs. Young to send an inhaler to school with Kelsey.
